Despite the longevity of new color prints, this is why I think there will always be fine art black & white. I hear you, I over improved the photographs. But let me remind you of a comment about one of my Ansel Adams photographic prints. "Why would I buy one those pictures! My pictures in my book are so much better." B&W of course.

I did over enhance the colors etc. See that's why your prints don't compare to those in books. Also that's partially why Eliot Porter cut up his film from the 60's on his death bed, so you would never know how bland the originals were. Well at least that's my opinion. I remember an assistant commenting that Porter did not use color filters. The advantage of doing dye transfers back then.
